Robert De Niro
Hollywood has been the main stage for many shining stars of our day. It gives them the fame, the glare and most importantly immortality in the minds of people who come across their performances. One such shining star is Robert De Niro who in many ways may be considered to be the face of modern day Hollywood. Born on the 17th August, 1943 he was the child of Virginia Admiral and Robert De Niro, Sr. and was born in a city which many consider to be the birthplace of acting.
Robert De Niro’s parents got divorced when he was three but since his father lived close by, he spent most of his time with him. After changing schools numerous times, he enrolled in the High School of Music and Arts but only stayed there briefly. De Niro performed well from an early age, since when he was about 10, mainly because he said the stage relieved him of his shyness.
He left high school at the age of 16 to follow his career as an actor by studying acting.
Robert De Niro mainly pursued his career as an actor. When he would return home, after watching a movie with his father, he would act out the roles he thought best.
His first appearance was in a movie Three Rooms in Manhattan where he appeared as a side actor and was not credited for his role.
Robert De Niro's next movie was The Wedding Party released in 1969. It was actually shot in 1963, when he was 20 years old.
He quickly gained public recognition in his next movie Bang the Drum Slowly, which was released in 1973, because of his role as the dying basketball player. He also made a good name for himself in Mean Streets, a 1973 drama.
The Godfather series was a great success for him. He even won an Academy Award for the best supporting actor for playing the role of young Vito Corleone in Godfather II.
Afterwards, he catapulted his acting career and did films like Taxi Driver in 1976, New York, New York the following year, Raging Bull in 1980. De Niro was quite fond of the film Taxi Driver because it had one of his favorite catch phrases “You talkin’ to me?” He had such a successful reputation mainly because he could communicate well with his director and understood his role well. He also had a knack for being able to deliver based on what was required. He also gave the voice for an animated character in Shark Tale.
Robert De Niro is very well known for ‘drowning’ in his act. He sees the depth of the character and works accordingly. For the same reason he is praised for the level of commitment he puts into his work. While preparing for his role in ‘Raging Bull’, he put on 60 pounds and took up boxing. He spent time in Sicily to bring in the Mafia feeling for Godfather II and has also been known to work as a taxi driver for the movie Taxi Driver.
In 1993, Robert De Niro directed his first movie named A Bronx Tale which was about Palminteri’s turbulent childhood. After that he did direct another movie in 2006. The Good Shepherd, starring Matt Damon and Angelina Jolie was about the origins of the CIA.
De Niro married Diahnne Abbott but they divorced later and he married Grace Hightower in 1997. They had a son in 1998, but they split in 1999. Their vows were renewed in 2004 till the present day.
