Robert Selden Duvall is an actor and a film director. Born on January 5, 1931, Duvall made his first theatre appearance in the late 50s and his love for the camera lenses has never wavered.
Robert Duvall was once quoted saying ‘…between action and cut, it’s a nice world, but you can’t force that anymore than you can force it in life…’ in acting and filming, he is looked up to like a veteran, having been involved in the industry for so long. His acting career has earned him eight awards; one Academy Award, one BAFTA, two Emmy, and four Golden Globes. He also got twenty eight nominations for different awards. He has featured in few of the most popular and highly regarded films of all times like The Godfather I &II (1972 &1974), To Kill A Mocking Bird (1962), Tender Mercies (1983), True Grit(1969), among others.
Robert Duvall was born to Mildred Virginia and William Howard Duvall in San Diego, California. Robert Duvall's mother was an actress and his father was a US Navy Admiral. His parents were methodists and therefore Duvall was raised in the religion of Christian Science.
Due to his father’s military career, Duvall’s family moved from time to time between various military bases. He went to Severn School in Maryland, the principia in St. Louis, Missouri. He later graduated at Principia College in Elsah, Illinois in 1953. After graduation, he took after his father and gave his service to the United States Army from 1953 to 1954 and left having attained a Private First Class.
The neighborhood playhouse in New York was Duvall’s next stop after he left the army. Here he studied acting while working as a clerk in a Manhattan post office. The theatre was where Duvall first started his acting career.
Robert Duvall performed in gateway playhouse where he played Virgil Blessing in Bus Stop. The early 70s saw him landing bigger roles like the Godfather I and II which came as his big break in the acting career as they were such great successes that earned him instant respect and recognition. By early 80s, Duvall was doing both film and television roles. Tender Mercies earned Duvall an Academy Award while TV programs like Lonesome Dove kept his funs entertained.
In the 90s, Duvall wrote and directed films like the Apostle (1997), Assassination Tango (2002). He also directed films like Angelo My Love (1983) and We’re Not Yet Set (1977). He also had roles in A Family Thing (1996), Broken Trail (2006), and Get Low (2010) which happens to be his most recent film.
Duvall got awards for Hollywood Award For Best Actor for Get Low, Emmy Award For Outstanding Lead Actor for Broken Trail (2006), 4 awards from different institutions for The Apostle (1997), Golden Globe Award For Best Actor for Stalin (1992), Academy Award For Best Actor for Tender Mercies (1983) and BAFTA Award For Best Actor In Supporting Role for Apocalypse Now (1979).
Robert Duvall married four times. He married Barbara Benjamin in 1964. They divorced in 1975 after which he married Gail Youngs in 1982. By marrying Gail, he temporarily became brother-in-law to Robin Young, Jim Youngs, and John Savage. Duvall and Gail divorced in 1986. He married Sharon Brophy five years later and this marriage lasted till 1996. In 1997, Duvall met Luciana Pedraza in Argentina. They have been together since then. They made their union official by getting married in 2005. In all these marriages, Duvall did not get any children.
Duvall, with the help of Luciana, is involved in charity. They strife to assist the poor women of Latin America get a grip of life by giving them training, micro credit, and links to health care.
