Rosa Minna Lubke Wagner

Rosa Minna Lubke Wagner was born on Dec. 22, 1910 in Eden in Concho County. Her parents were Anna Tiemann Lubke and Albert Lubke.
She was baptized on March 12, 1911 by Pastor Walthers at St. John Lutheran Church. She was confirmed April 5, 1925 at St. John Lutheran Church in Priddy by Rev. Backer.
She married Bernard Wagner Dec. 5, 1929 at St John Lutheran Church in Priddy by Rev. Mausur.
To this union was born a son, Wilford Albert Wagner of Junction, a daughter, LaVerne Wagner Garrett of Magnolia and a son, Wayne Lee Wagner of Dublin.
Her grandchildren are Joe Lynn Garrett of Spring, Roe Glynn Garrett of San Antonio, Hope Garrett Elms of Magnolia, Rhonda Wagner Nixon of Junction, Cathy Wagner Purtell of Keller and Jasen Wagner of Stephenville.
Great-grandchildren are Kirby, Kendall and Kenzie Garrett of Spring, Gatlin and Ethan Elms of Magnolia, Sonnye Nixon Morris of Oxnard, Calif, Jessie Jo Nixon of Junction and Will, Eli and Molly Rose Purtell of Keller.
Rosa’s story dates back to the 1890s when her father, Albert Lubke, was a dashing soldier in the U.S. Cavalry stationed at Fort Hancock, NM. His tour of duty in the service ironically caught the tragic sinking of the U.S. Battleship, Maine, in Havanna Harbor on Feb. 15, 1898. This led to the short lived Spanish American War and Lubke was numbered among Teddy Roosevelt’s Rough Riders in the Cuban campaign.
Although his mount was shot from under him in a cavalry charge, he came home unscathed after the peace declaration on Dec. 10, 1898.
He was wed to Annie Tiemann after his discharge from the service. A striking picture of the young officer in dress uniform is a cherished family memento. He was bugler for his regiment and enjoyed blowing “charge” for his grandchildren in later years. At his death his dress uniform was still in mint condition.
Following the Lubke-Tiemann wedding the newlyweds lived for a short time in Comanche, moved to Eden for awhile and returned to this area to make their home after Grandfather Lubke built them a new home.
The frame house consisted of two large rooms and a side room. Here the children, Hilda, Otto and Rosa were born. The trio attended Mountain View School, which was located between Priddy and Newburg.
Father Albert thought that his little ones were too small to walk the distance from the family farm to school, so he bought a burro and a cart for transportation. A burro was chosen for size as it was thought the children would be able to handle the small animal better than a horse.
Looking back over the years, Rosa said they arrived at school at 8 o’clock sometimes, at 9 o’clock sometimes, at 10 o’clock and sometimes not at all, if the burro was not in the mood. No amount of clucking and coaxing touched his heart if he didn’t want to move.
Rosa and Bernard lived in the Priddy area where Bernard owned the Service Mill. In 1951 they moved their family to Llano and began a new business, Dairy King. The Dairy King was established about the time of the Dairy Queen era. Later the couple moved back to Pottsville where they bought the Adam Wagner home place. After sometime there they settled in Hamilton.
Rosa was preceded in death by her husband of 59 years and a granddaughter, Fonda Wagner.
