Floyd Alton Bullard
Floyd Alton Bullard died Jan 18, 2008 at the age of 83. Funeral services were held Jan. 21 at St. John Lutheran Church.
He was born on Sept. 20, 1924, the son of George Floyd and Mamie (Rucker) Bullard of Hamilton. His father died leav-ing his mother with seven chil-dren to raise during the depres-sion. Since he was the oldest child, Mr. Bullard assumed the responsibility of helping his mother support the family.
When he was 15, he met Ruby Rosentreter who worked at her aunt’s dairy and he even-tually went to work delivering milk.
The couple got married at Grace Lutheran Church in Dal-las on December 13th, 1942.
The Bullards lived in Dallas seeking employment and soon decided they would rather live and raise their family in Hamil-ton.
When they returned to Ham-ilton, Mr. Bullard drove a gas truck, distributing gas through-out the county. He first pur-chased a Mobil gas and later operated a Shell gas station.
He was very involved in the Hamilton Volunteer Fire De-partment where he served for 40 years. His station was close to the square and when the si-ren would sound Mr. Bullard would run to the intersection and direct traffic which allowed the fire trucks immediate pas-sage through the square. If needed, he would hop on the last truck headed for the fire.
In 1955 he was awarded a Studebaker dealership and he became well known as a car salesman. He soon expanded his business and made the tran-sition from Studebaker to a Dodge Chrysler Plymouth deal-ership.
The Bullards were very in-volved in their community and church. They joined St. John in 1941 and raised their three daughters, as active members of the congregation. Mr. Bul-lard served as a Sunday School teacher when the church was located on Leslie street.
As a businessman in the community, Mr. Bullard was a member of the Chamber of Commerce, a member of the Lions Club and an avid sup-porter of the youth of our community working with the FFA. He was awarded the Honorary Chapter Farmer Award in recognition for his support of the kids in FFA.
Throughout his life and es-pecially after his retirement, Mr. Bullard loved the game of golf. He was a member of the Perry Country Club and every week he and his friends would play. He took time to teach his brothers, daughters, son-in-laws, workers, friends, and even strangers the sport of golf. There were times he would give away a set of clubs just to encourage someone to learn to play the game. As he grew older, he was not able to play as often as he desired but his love for the game never diminished.
He was preceded in death by his parents, George Floyd and Mamie (Rucker) Bullard; a brother, Marion Bullard; a son-in-law, Ronald Eary; a grand-son, Jason Lee Eary; and one granddaughter, Sara Elizabeth Wood.
