Mrs. Wood

Nadine Shirley Gromatzky Wood died Jan. 5, 2006. Funeral services were held Jan. 7 at Riley Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Russell Nebhut officiating.
Mrs. Wood was born in Hamilton on Aug. 9, 1936, the daughter of
Ernest and Frieda (Kunkel) Gromatzky. The Gromatzkys were members of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Aleman and when she was a month old she was taken by her parents to the church to be baptized.
The Gromatzky family owned a large farm on the Cow House creek in Aleman. As Nadine grew up on the farm she and her three siblings learned the value of hard work as they worked in the cotton fields and harvested the pecan crop each year from the family’s pecan orchard.
She attended school, first in Aleman, and then, when she reached high school age, in Hamilton. It was about this time that the Gromatzky family joined St. John Lutheran where Mrs. Wood was confirmed by Pastor R. P. Nerger.
She graduated from Hamilton High school in 1954 and went to work for Wilson Electric on the Hamilton square. Nadine worked for Wilson Electric until the early 1980's when the onset of Multiple Sclerosis made it difficult for her to continue.
She was married to Lester Wood in June of 1954. He preceded her in death in August 2006.
The ethics of hard work and a love of farming remained with Mrs. Wood throughout her life. She loved flowers and gardening and traveling.
When she did not feel like traveling or shopping, Mrs. Wood would shop the QVC channel on TV. She loved watching birds and over the years she had four miniature spitz dogs.
While her life was not easy with MS, she and Lester faced every challenge with optimism, love and support.
Mrs. Wood was preceded in death by her parents; Ernest Alfred Gromatzky and Frieda Louise (Kunkel) Gromatzky and one brother who passed away at three years of age, Milton Gromatzky; and her husband.
Survivors include her daughter, Shirley Jean (Wood) Freeman and husband Danny of Burleson; a grandson Matthew Kenshalo, also of Burleson a brother, Ernie Gromatzky and his wife Susan, and a sister, Janice Brown and her husband Kenneth as well as a number of additional family and friends.
