Lady Bulldogs headed
to basketball playoffs

Christlyn Chapman (20)
- In her first year as head coach in Hamilton, Kelli Jo Sexton and her Lady Bulldogs were headed into the final regular season game Tuesday night in Moody with a playoff berth locked-up and assured of at least a tie for second place in District 21-2A.
While McGregor had the district championship put away with a perfect 9-0 record to start this week, Hamilton was in sole possession of second place with a 6-3 mark. Bruceville-Eddy and Crawford were tied for third at 5-4. They were to face each other Tuesday night in B-Eddy in a game that will leave one or the other home for the playoffs.
If Crawford won and Hamilton lost, they would be tied for second. However, Hamilton had every reason to expect a win Tuesday in Moody that will leave them in sole possession of second. Moody entered this week tied with Clifton in the cellar with 1-8 records.
Regardless, Hamilton will begin the playoffs on either Monday or Tuesday night of next week against a team from District 22-2A. Coach Sexton said Monday that the game will probably be somewhere in the Waco area.
Which team from District 22-2A remained up in the air at the start of the week, as there was a three-way tie for second. Marlin had first place locked up and will therefore have a bye in the first round. Mart, Leon and Buffalo were tied for second, each with one game remaining. The second place finisher in District 21-2A will play the third place team from District 22-2A and vise versa.
In action last week, the Lady Bulldogs lost to Crawford on Tuesday night in Hamilton 47-34, but then easily clinched a playoff spot Friday night in Hamilton with a 67-25 win over Clifton.
In the loss to the Lady Pirates Tuesday night, the Lady Bulldogs just could not consistently find the basket. They scored only six points in the first quarter to enter the second period behind, 14-6. They put together their best period of play in the second, outscoring the Lady Pirates 15-6, to take a 21-20 lead to the half.
But the Lady Bulldogs’ offense turned cold again in the second half. Crawford outscored their hosts 17-5 in the third and 10-8 in the fourth.
Riley Burks led the Hamilton offense with 11 points, including four free throws and a three pointer. Doxie Thompson added eight, Sonal Patel and Chasey Senger six, Nicole Wenzel two and Jordan Box one.
But the Lady Bulldogs showed no signs of a lingering effect from the loss. On Friday night they came out and took control early. They outscored Clifton13-6 in the first quarter and maintained that pace for the remainder of the game. Hamilton led 31-12 at the half and 55-19 entering the final period of play.
Everyone on the Lady Bulldog roster contributed to the offensive total. Senger burned the Lady Cubs for 22 points. Burks was also in double figures with 13, including three three-pointers. Angel Banda scored nine, Ari Cavitt, Christlyn Chapman and Thompson each had six, Wenzel and Box two and Patel one.
