- The Bulldog varsity basket-ball team completed the first round of district play last week with two losses. On Tuesday in Hamilton the Dogs lost 38-62 to Bruceville-Eddy and on Friday in McGregor, Hamilton lost 35-55. Both games were closer that the final score might indicate.
In McGregor, Hamilton actually led for most of the first half. They gave up the lead with only a couple of minutes remaining in the half and trailed by three at the intermission, 20-23.
Hamilton Coach Howard Cox said after the game, “The Bulldogs came out and played well both offensively and defensively. Our 1-3-1 gave McGregor trouble all night long. The fourth quarter was the turning point, as we got into foul trouble and McGregor made a run that turned out to decide the game.”
Hamilton was outscored 14-10 in the third quarter and 18-5 in the final period.
Jorden Lowe led Hamilton with 13 points and Mason Burke had 12. Aaron Lewallen added five, James Ratliff three and Keaton Muxworthy two. Burke and Ratliff each had eight rebounds and Lowe and Lewallen had five.
Regarding the loss to the Bruceville-Eddy Eagles, Coach Cox commented, “Once again the Bulldogs came out strong, but the Eagles got hot in the second quarter and the Dogs couldn’t overcome the advantage.
Hamilton was outscored 21-11 in the second quarter.
Burke and Muxworthy were both in double figures for Hamilton with 11 and 10 points respectively. Lowe had nine, Ratliff six and Will Baird two.
Burke and Ratliff each pulled in eight rebounds, Muxworthy had seven and Baird one.
Hamilton was to start the second round of district play on Tuesday at home against Crawford. The Bulldogs start the second round still looking for their first district win, although they have played several close games.
On Friday they will host Clifton and travel to Moody next Tuesday.
The District 21-2A standings at the start of the week were: Crawford 5-0, McGregor 3-2, Moody 3-2, Bruceville-Eddy 3-2, Clifton 1-4 and Hamilton 0-5.
