- The Bulldog boys’ varsity basketball team lost a bid for third place in the annual Hamilton Basketball Tourn-ament Saturday, falling to Hillsboro 51-80.
The Hamilton boys began the tournament with a bye in the first round Thursday, but then lost to Comanche Friday night in the second round, 38-47.
Godley defeated Comanche Saturday afternoon 62-42 to claim the tournament championship. Rio Vista won the consolation championship, defeating Hico 51-38 Saturday.
In the Bulldogs’ second round loss to Comanche, they could not find the range. Hamilton trailed 9-18 at the end of the first quarter, but then played great defense in the second period, to go to the half behind by only four, 18-22. The third quarter was a duplication of the first with Comanche having an 18-9 scoring advantage. Hamilton fought back in the fourth, outscoring the visitors 11-7, but could not overcome the deficit.
Hamilton Coach Howard Cox said after the game, “The boys battled to the end, but couldn’t overcome a cold shooting performance.”
Mason Burke led the Hamilton offense with nine points. John Galindo and Keaton Muxworthy and Truman Baize each had six, Aaron Lewallen five, James Ratliff three, Jorden Lowe two and Acy May one.
The Bulldogs fell too far behind in the first half against Hillsboro to make a serious threat for the third place trophy. Hamilton trailed 8-17 at the end of the first period and 20-42 at the half. They were outscored 21-14 in the third quarter, but both teams sank 16 in the fourth.
Lowe and Ratliff were both in double figures for Hamilton with 10 each. Burke and Baize were right behind with nine, Galindo had seven and Lewallen and Muxworthy three.
In a game last Tuesday in Grandview, the Hamilton boys lost a squeaker to the Zebras, 57-59.
Coach Cox said, “It was a very exciting game. The Bulldogs battled and played exceptionally well. It was a great game to watch, as both teams performed athletically.”
The Dogs led 6-5 at the end of the first quarter, 20-19 at the half and had pulled away 49-37 going into the final quarter of play. But the Zebras got hot in the final period, outscoring the Dogs 22-8 to win the game.
Ratliff led the Dogs with 14 points and Burke was also in double figures with 13. Galindo and Lowe each had eight, Baize seven, Jordan Ernstes, Muxworthy and May each had two and Lewallen one.
