If anything, however, that will only add to the importance of the game. The winning team this week will still have hopes of claiming at least a share of the district title, but the loser will likely be only one loss away from elimination from a playoff berth. Currently, Clifton is leading the district race with a 4-0 record. Hamilton, Crawford, McGregor and Bruceville-Eddy are all tied for second with 1-1 records and Moody is in the cellar with an 0-2 record. While Hamilton travels to Crawford Friday, Clifton will go to Bruceville-Eddy and McGregor will host Moody. If the upset trend of last week continues again this week, the district race should be clear as mud by Saturday morning. But for now, the Bulldogs are just focusing on getting a win Friday night. The Harris Rating System has the Pirates favored by eight points. Harris also picks Clifton over B-Eddy by 13 and McGregor over Moody by 42. Crawford is now 4-2 on the season, as are the Bulldogs. The Pirates only loss in pre-district play was to Troy, 7-14. In other pre-district games they defeated Jarrell 42-12, Early 34-17, Axtell 41-24 and Grandview 28-25. They began district play with an impressive thumping of McGregor in McGregor 35-6. The Pirates returned 12 lettermen from last year’s district championship team, including 6’3”, 200-pound running back Brock Duncan. The Pirates are coached by Hamilton native and HHS graduate Delbert Kelm. The Bulldogs will have two games remaining in the regular season after Friday night - in Clifton next week and then at home against Moody. The Bulldogs have their work cut out, but it could prove to be an exciting few weeks for Hamilton fans. The Hamilton junior varsity will host the Pirates Friday night starting at 6 p.m., while the junior high teams travel to Crawford with a 5 p.m. kickoff. |
