Seniors receive $160K in awards

Over $160,000 in scholarships and awards were presented to members of the Hamilton High School graduating Class of 2008 during ceremonies at the Chandler Craig Auditorium at Hamilton High School last Friday night. About half of the funds are raised locally. Every graduating senior received at least one scholarship, according to high school counselor Jennifer Ingram.
Graduation exercises for the HHS Class of 2008 will be held this Saturday at 2 p.m. in the Chandler Craig Auditorium. This was the first year that the awards presentations were held separately from the graduation exercises. The valedictorian, salutatorian and honor graduates will not be announced until after final exams are concluded this week.
The guest speaker for this year’s graduation will be HHS Spanish teacher Shelly Burch. The valedictorian and salutatorian will also address the audience and fellow class members.
The Hamilton Junior High eighth grade promotion ceremony will be held Friday night in the Chandler Craig Auditorium.
Where not otherwise noted, the awards were presented by HISD Superintendent Sam Bell or HHS Principal Matt Dossey.
American Legion School Awards- Based on character, academics, leadership, citizenship and qualities that will lead to a productive citizen and chosen by the faculty of the high school. Presented by Legion Post 222 Commander Don Damrom to Asa Hamilton and Whitley Quigg.
Army Scholar Athlete Award- Based on high standards exhibited in both the academic and athletic settings and are chosen each year by the faculty of the high school. Recipients: Doxie Thompson and Asa Hamilton.
Hal Williams Maxwell Award ($200 and silver bowl) Based on academics, leadership and overall general ability. Recipient: Riley Burks.
Pottsville Extension Education Association Scholarship ($500 each) One of Texas’ most effective volunteer organizations in the support of families through lifelong learning opportunities, the scholarships are presented to provide a catalyst for leadership development of Texas women and to provide opportunities for individual growth to help them reach their full potential through educational pursuits. Recipients: Tiffani Headley and T.J. Stroud.
Hamilton County Texas A&M Club ($500) Local A&M alumni provide this scholarship for students planning to attend the College Station campus. Recipient: Amber Weems.
Virgil M. Santy Chapter of the National Honor Society Award ($475 each) Awarded to members of the National Honor Society who have demonstrated outstanding character, leadership, scholarship and service throughout high school. The chapter members are required to participate in both group and individual service projects for the community. NHS Advisor Mike Rountree presented awards to: Rachel Bottlinger, Riley Burks, Tiffani Headley, Cali Kirkham, Sonal Patel, Garrett Brooks, Asa Hamilton, Seth LeBlanc, Angelica Long, Katie Neal, James Ratliff, Malinda Regalado, Heather Weeks, Amber Weems, Cole Wells and Doxie Thompson.
Jennifer Hall Memorial Scholarship ($500 each) Presented in memory of Jennifer Hall by her family (Sandy and Roseann Hall and sons John and Sam). Recipients: Maycon Stork, Malinda Regalado and Asa Hamilton.
Chandler Craig Memorial Fund Future Healthcare Professional Scholarship ($1,500) Presented to encourage and support a graduating senior interested in pursuing a career in the healthcare field. Presented by HGH Chief Financial Officer Michele Cathey to Tiffani Headley.
Deanna K. Supercinski Memorial Scholarship ($500) Presented to honor a young person for high academic standards, school and community service, leadership roles and respected character as a Hamilton High School student. Recipient: Katie Neal.
Hamilton EDC Scholarship ($1,500 each) Presented to students interested in obtaining education or training that will lead to licensure or certification in technical, skilled trades or health-related fields. The scholarships are designed to encourage the students to prepare for jobs in existing or emerging skills areas that offer long-term financial and professional benefits both to the students and to the Hamilton community. Recipients: Kalon Armstrong, Danielle DeLeon, Kailee Hibert and Jeffrey Donahoo.
Brand Dairies Agriculture Scholarship ($400) Frank and Joni Brand of Brand Dairies award this scholarship to an HHS student in recognition of his or her plans to pursue an agricultural related field of study in college. Recipient: Kalon Armstrong.
John Brian Johnson Memorial Scholarship ($500 each) This scholarship was established by the Hamilton National Bank to honor the late John Brian Johnson. It is now awarded annually by the First State Bank Central Texas. Recipients: Amber Weems and Tiffani Headley.
Johnny Harris Memorial Scholarship ($500) Presented by his family to honor the late Johnny Harris, a prominent businessman, rancher and community leader. Presented by ag instructor Terry Baize to Kalon Armstrong.
Melissa Green Scholarship ($1,000 each) Melissa Green was a 2001 graduate of Hamilton High School tragically killed in 2002 by a drunk driver. Her family awards the scholarship to young people who have a love for life. Recipients: Jeremy Hughes and Tiffani Headley.
Student Council Scholarships ($250 each) Awarded to graduating student council members who have shown initiative and support of the organization and of their school. Student council sponsor Patricia Leach presented scholarships to Asa Hamilton, Seth LeBlanc, Garrett Brooks, Whitley Quigg, Sonal Patel and Jordan Box.
Saint-Gobian Abrasives Recycling Scholarship ($1,000) Presented to a young lady to help her further her education. Recipient: Katy Chupp.
FCCLA Scholarship ($250) Family, Career and Community Leaders of America is a dynamic and effective national student organization that helps young men and women become leaders and address important personal, family, work and societal issues. The scholarship is presented to a senior who exhibits outstanding leadership, scholarship and community service, and who demonstrates well-roundedness through various activities. FCCLA advisor Kim Luker presented the scholarship to Kailee Hilbert.
Hamilton Ex-Students Association Scholarship ($250 each) Presented to deserving students. Recipients: Doxie Thompson and Kacie Williams.
Prof. Rodney Love Scholarship Trust ($1,000) A trust established in 1995 to perpetuate the memory of Professor Rodney Love, a well-known and respected educator and coach in the local and area schools for some 30 years. The objective of the scholarship is to encourage and assist deserving high school graduates. Mary Kay Gardner presented the scholarship to Leah Jester.
Leonard Dale Blackwell Memorial Scholarship ($200) Presented in memory of Leonard Dale Blackwell for the past 14 years. Recipient: Tiffani Headley.
Tiffany Cole Memorial Scholarship ($500) Tiffany Cole was a 1998 graduate of Hamilton High School who died from leukemia in September 2002 after completing four years at Mary Hardin-Baylor. Tiffany’s sister, Jennifer Cole, presented this year’s scholarship to T.J. Stroud.
Hamilton County Livestock Association ($750) The scholarship was established in 1997 to honor graduating seniors who have participated in the county show for three of the past four years. The scholarship recognizes individuals for leadership, scholarship potential and their service to the livestock show program. Recipient: Maycon Stork.
Extraco Bank Scholarship ($1,000) The recipient of the Extraco Bank Scholarship must be of high moral character and be a participant in church, school and community activities. He or she must also be in the top 25 percent of his/her class and intending to enter the business profession. Recipient: Amber Weems.
Hamilton Volunteer Fire Department ($500) The Hamilton VFD established a Junior Firefighter program last year in the hopes of steering some young men and women toward the firefighter/paramedic profession. The funds for the scholarship come from individual firemen and not from any operating or donated monies. This year’s scholarship goes to the son of one of the Hamilton Volunteer Firemen who has served the community honorably for the past 20 years. The recipient is going into an intense training program to become a paramedic and then on into the field of firefighting. Fireman Robert Stanley presented the scholarship to Jeffery Donahoo.
Ben and Nell Helmcamp Scholarship ($1,000) Awarded to a student who is an exceptionally well-rounded person, one who has demonstrated good moral character, has achieved high academic honors, participated in several extracurricular activities, has leadership qualities and has performed both school and community service. Presented by Ben and Nell Helmcamp to Asa Hamilton.
Gary Wayne Schoen Jr. Memorial Scholarship ($2,500) First presented in 1990. After graduating from HHS in 1987, Gary attended Western Texas College in Snyder on a golf scholarship. He later transferred to the University of Texas at San Antonio in the fall of 1989, also on a golf scholarship. He was killed in an auto accident on October 26, 1989. Gary won the Class 2A State Golf Tournament on May 15, 1987. Recipients: Aaron Lewallen and Tiffani Headley.
Hamilton Rock House Lodge Scholarship ($500 each) Awarded to graduating seniors who are very deserving. Recipients: Kailee Hilbert and Tiffani Headley.
Montgomery GI Bill (up to $88,000 each) A program designed to aid all service members in obtaining higher education in either a traditional university/college, vocational or technical school. The G.I. Bill can be used while the member is on active duty or it can be used up to 10 years after date of honorable discharge from service. Presented by U.S. Army Sergeant First Class Rivera to Cole Wells and by U.S. Navy Petty Officer Burns to Mikayla Bias, Kelly Blum, Ethan Chorenziak, Dalton DeLeon, Garland Riggs, Jon Salley and Maycon Stork.
Seth and Mabelle Moore Scholarship Granted to one or more students each year chosen by a committee to help pay for tuition and other expenses while attending college. Recipient of $3,500 scholarships: T.J. Stroud; and to other deserving students (a one-time $500 each scholarship) Amber Weems, Rowdy Dailey, Shawnelle McCafferty, Derek Goerdel, Ashley Koehler, T.J. Stroud, Jorden Lowe and Morgan Keoughan; and to other deserving students (a one time each $250 scholarship) Beau Ballard, Jordan Hopson, Victoria Amaro, Ashton Granado, Carlos Perez, Katrina Petta and Clark Pumphrey.
Memorial Scholarship ($4,000) Blackwell Electric, Inc. and its employees are giving a scholarship to a deserving young individual. This person has shown persistence, dedication, compassion and leadership qualities. Regardless of the conditions she has had to deal with at such a young age, this individual has decided to exceed expectations in everything she does and does not let anything stand in her way. This individual has been involved in the community activities giving her time and effort in order to help others. This scholarship for $4,000 is to be awarded over two years. Recipient: Tiffani Headley
Royis and Ann Tucker Scholarship ($1,000) Mr. and Mrs. Royis Tucker are lifelong residents of Central Texas. Both have lived and worked in Hamilton County. They own property in the Pottsville area. The Tuckers are interested in continuing higher education, and this scholarship is given to help a student with good character, financial need and ambition to attend college. Recipient: Maycon Stork.
Texas Women’s University TWU is proud to present a presidential scholarship to a young lady who plans to enroll there in the fall semester. This scholarship is for full tuition and fees up to four years. Recipient: Katie Neal.
Hamilton General Hospital Auxiliary Future Healthcare Scholarship ($500 each) The Hamilton Hospital Auxiliary is dedicated to promoting the health of the Hamilton community. They are pleased to be able to provide this opportunity to further the education of future healthcare workers and professionals among the youth. Applicants for the scholarship must be graduating high school students who reside in the Hamilton County Hospital District or former hospital district graduates already enrolled in an undergraduate or graduate program at an accredited institution of higher education and must be pursuing a degree in a medical or other health-related field of study with a minimum GPA of 3.5 or 85 percent. Presented by auxiliary member Mary K Gardner. Recipients: Aaron Lewallen and Kailee Hilbert.
The Galindo Memorial Scholarship ($250) Presented by the Galindo Family in memory of Frank Galindo Sr., Maria Galindo, Danny Lopez Sr., Ryan Galindo and Jessie “Cooter” Galindo. “Family is the root of inspiration and success. We’ve been taught this lesson by our predecessors. In their memory, we honor a most deserving recipient in hopes they will carry our name forward in prosperity and in character.” Presented by Sonny Galindo. Recipient: Whitley Quigg.
Texas Student Housing ($2,500) The Texas Student Housing Scholarship is awarded to a young man who will be attending Texas A&M in the fall. Recipient: Aaron Lewallen.
Texas Tech University ($20,000) Texas Tech University is proud to present an Honors Endowed Scholarship in the amount of $4,000 per year for four years of undergraduate studies and one year of graduate studies for a total of $20,000 to a young man who plans to enroll there in the fall semester. Recipient: Garrett Brooks.
Denette Gilmore Memorial Scholarship ($500 each) Created by her classmates, the HHS Class of 1984, to honor her memory. She participated in many activities in high school including cheerleader, president of the Key Club, Miss HHS, treasurer of the senior class, student council, Most Intellectual and graduated as valedictorian. She attended Angelo State University and Tarleton State University, earning a Bachelor of Science degree in biology and elementary education. She began teaching at Hamilton ISD in 2000. She made a profound impact upon the school and her students. This year’s graduating class was Denette’s first group of students in Hamilton. Classmate Spencer Jones and Stanton Blackburn presented the scholarships to Jeremy Hughes, Whitley Quigg and Amanda Allen.
Robert G. Carr and Nona K. Carr Scholarship Foundation ($2,500) Mr. and Mrs. Carr were longtime friends and supporters of Angelo State University. They bequeathed to the Board of Regents, Texas State University System, as trustees for the use and benefit of Angelo State University, their very significant joint interests in oil, gas and other minerals with the provision that these properties be held in trust for the purpose of providing academic scholarships for the needy and worthy students who are enrolled at Angelo State University. Recipients: James Ratliff and Katy Chupp.
Joy Gallant Archer Scholarship ($1,000) Awarded through the President’s Scholarship Committee at Tarleton State University from the endowment created by the Joy Gallant Archer estate. Recipient: Tiffani Headley.
Removing Educational Barriers ($1,000) Awarded through the University Scholarship Committee at Tarleton State University from the endowment created by the Greater Texas Foundation for first-time incoming students from Texas. Recipient: Heather Weeks.
Angelo State University Athletic Scholarship ($2,000) Angelo State University awards this scholarship through the University Track Program. Recipient: James Ratliff.
Abilene Christian University ($43,000) ACU is proud to present two scholarships to a young man who will be attending ACU in the fall. The AB Barrett Scholarship is valued at $25,000 and the ACT/SAT Scholarship is valued at $18,000. Recipient: Tyler Gentry.
Hamilton County Dove Festival Pageant ($500) Awarded to the Queen Division winner each year. Recipient: T.J. Stroud.
Asthma and Allergy Foundation ($1,500) AAFA-TX and Kareem Bacchus Memorial Scholarship. Recipient: Aaron Lewallen.
Texas A&M University ($20,000) Texas A&M University is proud to present a regent scholarship to a young lady who plans to enroll there in the fall semester. Recipient: Sonal Patel.
Small Schools Academic Competition ($666.66) The Small School Academic Competition hosted annually by the Texas Association of Community Schools affords our students with additional scholarship monies. Questions for the competition are derived from the TEKS of high school courses in science, English, mathematics and social studies. Teams are made up of three students, one with an A average in those subjects, one with a B average and one with a C average. Scholarships are awarded for area and state competitions, with amounts dependent upon entries for the year. Students receive scholarship money during their senior year upon acceptance to an accredited college. Presented by high school teacher Randi Jones. Recipient: Tyler Gentry.
McClennan Community College Tartan Scholars. Presented to a young lady who plans to enroll their in the fall semester. This scholarship is for full tuition and fees, for up to 18 hours for four semester years. Recipient: Kalon Armstrong.
A.G. and Phelo Thompson Scholarships ($500 each) Phelo Thompson established this scholarship in 1998 in honor of her deceased husband, A.G. The Thompsons were active in business in Hamilton for 50 years. Recipients: Doxie Thompson, Cali Kirkham, Seth LeBlanc, Riley Burks, Hope Weeks, Malinda Regalado, Rachel Bottlinger, Angelica Long, Phillip Haile, Jordan Box, Amanda Allen, Lindsey Henderson, Bree Lester, Tara Shearin, Cindy Bosse, Jordan Ernstes, Kacie Williams, Kaity McKenzie and Sherod Townsend.
