Six-year-old Shay Bradshaw had bone-graft surgery last Tuesday to treat a bone infection near her knee.
Her mother, Shmay Bradshaw, reports that the surgery went well, and Shay is off of all IV medications, although she continues to take antibiotic treatment in pill form.
Shay, a kindergarten student at Ann Whitney Elementary School, was hospitalized last month after doctors discovered a severe infection in her leg. The infection, which they are treating as staph, was so serious that a surgeon had to scrape away a large amount of the bone and insert a time-released antibiotic to treat the infection.
The bone graft operation used bone from her hip to help rebuild the affected area on her leg. She will remain on antibiotics for about a year.
Besides Shay, Shmay has three other children. She has been unable to work during Shay’s illness, but plans to return to work in a few weeks.
KCLW radio station sponsored a fund-raiser for the family, which raised $4,099. A fund has been established at Extraco Bank for anyone who would like to help the family.
