INVENTOR OF THE YEAR - Lauren Lee was named “Inventor of the Year” at The Invention Convention held April 21 at Hamilton I.S.D. She invented the “Fire Alert,” a system to let home owners know that a fire is near. The system senses the direction of the smoke, and it alerts the Fire Department and the home owner.

The annual City of Hamilton Spring Cleanup Day will be this Saturday. Trash trucks from Waste Management will begin picking up trash at curbside at 7 a.m. Saturday.
City Administrator Bill Funderburk told The Herald-News that residents may want to put their trash out Friday night because of the early starting time Saturday. “The trucks will only be up each street one time, so residents need to have their trash out by 7 a.m.,” said Funderburk.
Mike Lovell, chairman of the Mayor’s Beautification Committee, is asking for volunteers to show up at City Hall at 7:30 a.m. to begin cleaning up around the square and out Main Street and Rice Street.
“We want to have these main arteries through Hamilton looking good as we head into the peak travel season. Lots of people travel through Hamilton during the spring and summer months and we want to give the best impression possible,” said Lovell.
Also on Saturday, the old dump grounds will be open from 8 a.m. until 1 p.m. for people to dispose of brush. However, there will not be dumpsters at the City Barn for additional trash, as there have been in past years. Funderburk said they were unable to schedule the dumpsters this year.
“For this reason, it is even more important that residents have their trash to the curb by 7 a.m.,” said Funderburk.
Hazardous waste, such as tires, batteries and chemicals, will not be accepted. However, Funderburk said that the city will schedule a hazardous waste collection for its residents sometime later this summer. He said the date has not been set yet.
