The Hamilton General Hospital Healthcare Foundation is co-sponsoring this year's Sweetest Loop event at Circle T Arena with Scott & White Foundation. Other sponsors are Circle T and corporate sponsor Wrangler.
The week preceding the Sweetest Loop will be packed with activities in Hamilton focused on women's health issues.
“We tip our hats to our ropers, our sponsors, our friends and our hometown, Hamilton, Texas, for making this event one we are all proud of,” said Circle T’s Ken Beshears in announcing the third annual event.
Proceeds from the Tough Enough to Wear Pink fund-raiser will benefit breast cancer research and women’s wellness programs, and in its first two years the local event has provided about $64,000 for breast cancer research and paid out an amazing $500,000 in cash and prizes.
“Thanks in part to the incredible generosity of the participants of the Sweetest Loop Event at the Circle T Arena in Hamilton, the Scott & White Cancer Research Institute continues the development of cutting-edge research and treatment in the ongoing fight to find a cure for cancer,” said Dr. Art Frankel, head of the Institute and Oncology at Scott & White.
The community is invited to all of the events throughout the week. In addition to the roping competition, there will also be informative talks on women’s health issues, a golf tournament, silent and live auctions, plenty of eating, a mini-health fair and a dance.
With the upcoming opening of its Wellness Center and clinic expansion and in conjunction with Circle T’s Sweetest Loop, Hamilton Healthcare System has planned a Women's Wellness Week full of events for women.
Women’s Wellness Week will include “Ladies Only for a Healthier Hamilton,” a spa-like atmosphere that will include free mini-massages, manicures, pedicures, foot rubs or foot scrubs. These will be held in the Hamilton General Hospital Board room on Tuesday and Thursday, April 29 and May 1, from 4 to 5:30 p.m. Local specialists have agreed to donate their time in providing these services; however, appointments will be necessary and will be limited to 50 participants on each of the days.
Trina Chilton, Tamera Walker, Christi Carr, Patti Dyer, Michele Marwitz and others will be on hand to pamper each participant with one of the services. Call (254) 386-1958 to sign up.
On Tuesday, April 29, at noon in the HGH Board Room, Lee Ann Lee, RN, BSN, will present “Just Us Gals: Fitness to Fit Your Lifestyle.”
This informative talk should inspire all women to fit fitness into their daily routines.
That evening at 6 p.m. Tuesday, also in the board room, Dr. Monte Horne of the Family Practice Associates will speak on the topic, “When the Diagnosis is Cancer.” This session will be useful to anyone – man or woman – who has experienced cancer or who has a family member or friend dealing with the disease. Cancer is the second-leading cause of death in women.
On Wednesday, April 30, Dr. Luke Killian, also of the FPA, will speak on osteoporosis at 11:30 a.m. in the board room. A “brown bag” lunch will be provided to participants who RSVP to 386-1958 by April 25. Osteoporosis is a disorder that weakens bones, often causing them to break. Although osteoporosis can strike at any age, an estimated 10 million people over age 50 have osteoporosis, and almost 34 million have low bone mass that puts them at increased risk for developing the disease. Four out of five people who have the disease are women.
On Thursday, May 1, Susan Shaffer, FNP, will address the subject of diabetes in a talk beginning at 11:30 a.m. in the board room. A diabetes-friendly brown bag lunch will be provided for those who RSVP by April 25. Diabetes is a disease in which a person’s blood glucose levels are too high. It affects 20.8 million people, or 7% of the US population.
At 6 p.m. Thursday in the board room, Dr. Randy Lee will speak about cardiac disease, the leading cause of death in women.
On Friday at 11:30 a.m., nationally known women’s speaker Deb Gauldin will speak during a luncheon at the Youth and Family Life Center of First Baptist Church. Gauldin’s topic is “Stretch Marks to Laugh Lines.” She is a former obstetrics nurse and lifelong champion of women's health causes. She is also a comedienne who delivers her message with honesty and hilarity, leaving participants feeling valued, renewed and recommitted. Please RSVP to 386-1958 by April 25.
And finally, on Saturday during the roping competition, hospital staff and Foundation Board members will provide a mini-health fair at the Circle T Arena from 1 to 3 p.m. The fair will include information on breast health, reproductive health, heart health, bone health, diabetes, skin health, age-appropriate exercises, walking programs, family exercises, body mass index, the importance of water, nutrition, calorie counting, violence against women and smoking cessation.
Blood tests will be offered for glucose, cholesterol, CEA and Ca125, as well as PSA tests for men. There will be a self-defense demonstration at 1 p.m., and skin (mole) exams will be offered 2-3 p.m. Privacy will be provided for the skin exams.
All of the Women’s Wellness Week events are free and offered as a community service of Hamilton Healthcare System. Call (254) 386-1958 for more information or to make an appointment for one of the “Ladies Only” events, the brown-bags or the Friday luncheon.
On Thursday evening, the ropers will begin arriving at Circle T, including last year’s #11 winners Judd Wall and Shaun Schiller, pro-am champs Taylor Mitchell and Wade Combs and open winners Kevin Stewart and Kirt Jones.
On Friday morning, Circle T will sponsor the Sweetest Swing golf tournament. For more information about the tournament, call (254) 386-3559.
Contestant check-in will be Friday afternoon, and a Texas Beach Party will begin at 5 p.m., followed by an Open Calcutta. Tickets for the Beach Party, which will feature seafood and smoked ribs, are available for $21 each from any Foundation Board member, at the front desk of the hospital or at Circle T. HGH Healthcare Foundation Board members are Slim Witzsche, Jane Crouch, Lucy Lee, Tom Adams, LaVerne Funderburk, Riney Jordan, Dr. Randy Lee, David Lengefeld, Julie McMullen, Pattye Ward and Tom White.
Saturday morning will feature four rounds of the open beginning at 9 a.m., followed by pro-am competition and the open short-go.
A Mexican Fiesta is set for 5 p.m. Saturday with tickets priced at $24. The #11 Calcutta will follow the fiesta, then silent and live auctions and a dance featuring the Mark Giles Band. The #11 short-go will be Sunday morning, followed by awards.
Team roping requires timing, speed, agility and strength and has become one of the nation’s fastest growing spectator sports. Admission is free at the Sweetest Loop, May 2-4 at Circle T Arena.
“Joining us for this great fun-filled weekend will not only put a smile on your face but much-needed funds in the hands of our researchers so that they may find the cures we need so desperately,” Beshears said.
