Speaker to provide
‘therapeutic humor’
during wellness week

HIGHWAY CLOSED- East Main in Hamilton was closed for much of the afternoon Friday, while Texas New Mexico Power Company repairmen replaced a power line pole that was snapped by the wide load, above. Reportedly, the above truck transporting a natural gas cooling unit, met another truck just above the crest of the hill, yielded too far, and struck the power pole. The pole was broken by the impact, but fortunately did not fall. There were reportedly over 14,000 volts of electricity flowing through the lines. The TNMP linemen skillfully disconnected the lines, allowing the truck to move and then replaced the broken pole.

- Nationally known women’s speaker Deb Gauldin will be a guest speaker during Hamilton Healthcare System’s Women’s Wellness Week April 29-May 2. Gauldin will speak at a luncheon slated for Friday, May 2, beginning at 11:30 a.m. in the Youth and Family Life Center of First Baptist Church.
Gauldin, a former nurse, has been a champion and advocate of women’s health causes for as long as she can remember. She has entertained at events nationally and “brought the house down” at the National Wellness Conference with her rendition of “Big-Legged Woman.” Audiences appreciate her personable, down-to-earth demeanor and the way she draws participants in by not setting herself apart.
Gauldin customizes songs and creates cartoons for all aspects of care for women. From incontinency and heart disease to the disease of being overcommitted and out of balance in general, she makes an immediate connection with participants. They leave feeling better about themselves and about their ability to put what they learn into action.
Gauldin says that first and foremost, she is a wife and mother, sister and daughter. She was turned down after applying to the U.S. Peace Corps at age 10, and tried to join the NAACP at 13. She moved through the ranks of healthcare one step and conviction at a time. At 12 she was a Sunshine geriatric volunteer. She advanced from the Junior Red Cross to hospital candy-striper to nurses aide, licensed practical nurse to registered nurse. She also studied music, art and mass communications at California State University, Hayword.
She has been part of a team piloting therapeutic humor, pet therapy and other complementary therapies and is currently on the board of the Association for Applied and Therapeutic Humor.
Since creating her professional speaking and entertaining business in 1993, she has delighted audiences from Fargo to New Zealand. Her recordings of “Hormone-Affirming Music and Humor” are enjoyed and used in educational settings in six countries and were featured in a National Public Radio program.
The free luncheon is open to all women (and brave spouses) in the community. Call 386-1958 to RSVP or for more information about Women’s Wellness Week.
