Petition to call for vote
on ‘unit system’ for county

TRACTOR TECHNICIANS – Three Hamilton High School students, Jon Salley, Jeremy Hughes and Cole Wells, recently competed at the state Tractor Technician competition winning third place as a team. Hughes was fourth high individual. Each of the team members was awarded a tool chest packed with tools and Hughes received an additional tool chest and tools for his individual award. After participating in the Tractor Technician CDE at the area level, students are eligible to apply for a summer-long employment opportunity with participating students being exposed to all aspects of operation of a local equipment dealership. - A group of residents announced this week that they will be circulating a petition in an effort to have Hamilton County adopt the “unit system” for management of county road and bridge activities. They hope to have the issue placed on the General Election ballot in November.
Ben Giles presented The Herald-News with the follow-ing written statement Tuesday explaining their proposal.
To The Citizens of Hamilton County:
It is our intent to create a Road and Bridge Department in Hamilton County per Texas Department of Transportation code 252.301. This would combine the Road and Bridge Departments of all four (4) precincts. This type of org-anization is commonly called “The Unit System.”
A petition will be circulated to place this on the ballot in the November Election for the Citizens of Hamilton County to vote FOR or AGAINST.
The reason for this change is that all persons in the department would be working for a Road Engineer and would be more efficient in the use of personnel and equipment. The commissioners would direct the Road Engineer in dealing with the roads and bridges. This, also would give the com-missioners more time to manage the business of the county.
Concerned Citizens: Ben Giles, Tom Tyler, Scott Weatherford, Calvin Friederich, Charlie York and John Schoedel.
