Hamilton County Sheriff Randy Murphree easily with-stood a challenge for his office in the Democratic Party Primary Tuesday, receiving 995 votes to Billy Hollingsworth’s 468. However, Gregg Bewley gave notice that he will be a formidable opponent in the November General Election. Bewley, who was unopposed in the Republican Primary, still drew 603 votes.
Voters in both parties turned out in large numbers in the county party primaries. In the Democratic Primary, 1516 people voted. In the Republican Primary, 774 people voted. Voters continued to utilize the early voting opportunity. There were 587 ballots cast in the Democratic Primary during the early voting period and 324 Republicans took advantage of the chance to vote early.
In another local election, Jim Boatwright held on to his position as Hamilton County Commissioner of Precinct One, but by a narrow margin. Boatwright received 111 votes in the Republican Primary, while challenger Johnny Wagner, Jr. received 92. Boatwright does not face an opponent in the General Election.
In addition to the highly focal local races, contested presidential races also attract high numbers of voters to the polls, as they did across the state.
Hamilton County voters favored Hillary Clinton with 800 votes to Barack Obama’s 507 in the Democratic Primary. County Republican voters preferred John McCain to Mike Huckabee 385 to 314. Ron Paul also received 15 votes.
In the Democratic race to be the nominee for Railroad Commissioner, Mark Thomp-son, a resident of Hamilton County, received 516 votes to Dale Henry’s 427 and Art Hall’s 115.
