A rash of break-ins of vehicles occurred in the early morning hours of Wednesday, Feb. 20, but by the end of the day the Hamilton County Sheriff’s Department had a suspect in custody.
Sheriff Randy Murphree told The Herald-News that his office began receiving calls to report vehicle burglaries early Wednesday morning. He said that approximately 14 vehicles were broken into and various items were stolen including cell phones, prescription medicine, GPS units and money.
Investigator Sgt. Ronnie Ashmore said that during the investigation a suspect was identified. Later that day, Michael McMeekin, 17, was arrested and charged with burglary of motor vehicles and placed in the Hamilton County Jail. He is from San Angelo and was visiting here.
McMeekin has subsequently been charge with debit card abuse. He remains in jail facing a $5,000 bond for the burglaries, a misdemeanor, and $10,000 for the debit card abuse, a felony.
