Early voting in the Party Primary Elections begins in the Hamilton County Clerk’s Office on Feb. 19 and continues through Feb. 29. The actual Election Day is Tuesday, March 4. Applications for mail ballots are also now being accepted in the County Clerk’s Office.
Presidential candidates for the General Election next November are being chosen for both the Democratic and Republican parties. Through the early primaries, New York Senator Hillary Clinton and Illinois Senator Barack Obama, were in a virtual tie for the Democratic nomination. Ari-zona Senator John McCain had a significant lead over former Arkansas Governor Mike Huckabee and Texas Congress-man Ron Paul also remained in the race.
The names of presidential candidates who have withdrawn from the race will still appear on the ballots.
Hamilton County voters will also have an opportunity to cast ballots for candidates in other state and local party races.
Locally, voters in the Democratic Party Primary will decide between incumbent Randy Murphree and Billy Hollingsworth to see which will face Republican Gregg Bewely next fall in the race for Hamilton County Sheriff. Bewely does not have an opponent in the Republican Primary.
On the Republican ballot, voters in Commission Precinct One will choose between incumbent Jim Boatwright and challenger Johnny Wagner, Jr.
Democrats will be choosing between Mark Thompson, Dale Henry and Art Hall to oppose Republican incumbent Michael Williams next fall for Railroad Commissioner. All early voting will be conducted for the primary elections in the County Clerk’s Office on weekdays between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. Registered voters can only vote in one party primary.
