EILERS HONORED- Members of the 1998 Lady Bulldog state championship basketball team were honored last Friday during a half-time ceremony of the Hamilton-Clifton game. In addition, retired Lady Bulldog basketball coach Larry Eilers (right) was honored by having the gym floor named for him. Bulldog athletic director Chris Wilde (left) made the announcement and presented Eiler’s with a plaque commemorating the occasion. During Eilers’ tenor as head coach in Hamilton, the Lady Bulldogs twice advanced to the finals of the state tournament, including one state championship. He had a remarkable 285-91 career record here. Eilers retired from coaching following the state championship season and now farms and ranches in the Pottsville area. Wilde proclaimed, “Let this floor hence forth ever be known as Larry Eilers Floor.” Wilde told The Herald-News after the ceremony that he feels Eilers is more responsible than any other individual for elevating Hamilton athletics to the competitive status it has enjoyed the last many years in both girls and boys sports. The always eagerly awaited bi-annual U.I.L. re-alignment was announced last Friday morning. For Bulldog fans, the re-alignment probably con-tained both good and bad news. Most fans will welcome the change from Region III to Region II, but the members of the new district remain the same as before with the addition of two more schools.
The number of Hamilton’s district will change from 21-2A to 16-2A, meaning the Bulldogs head north rather than east in regional competition. Making the change with Hamilton were all of the members of the previous District 21-2A – Moody, Clif-ton, Bruceville-Eddy, Crawford and McGregor, plus Troy and Hico.
That means that an already tough district, just got tougher. Also, typically coaches do not like eight team districts. Mathematically the odds of getting into the playoffs are greater and also the two additional games can test a team’s depth.
Hamilton Athletic Director and Head Football Coach Chris Wilde released a tentative football schedule on Monday.
The Bulldogs are scheduled to play scrimmages against Axtell and Cisco. The Axtell scrimmage is set for August 16 in Hamilton and the Cisco scrimmage will be there on Aug. 21.
The three pre-district games will be against Comanche, Goldthwaite and Bangs, in that order. However, the location of the pre-district games have not been set.
After an open date on Sept. 19, the Dogs will begin district play on Sept. 26 in Hamilton against Moody. On Oct. 3 Hamilton will travel to Clifton and then be back home on Oct. 10 against Troy.
Hamilton will then travel to McGregor on Oct. 17, host Bruceville-Eddy Oct. 24, travel to Crawford on Oct. 31 and finish up district play Nov. 7 against Hico in Hamilton.
Coach Wilde stressed that the schedule is tentative and sites could easily change.
Just down the road, Jonesboro and Cranfills Gap will join Mullin, Sidney and Star in District 1A 6-Man, Division 2.
Also, Evant will be in District 14-1A Division 1 with DeLeon, Goldthwaite, Gorman and Meridian.
