Dove Fest plans taking shape

SCOUTING OUT FUN – Four members of Hamilton Boy Scout Troop 311 volunteered their time Saturday to help Ham-ilton Civic Theatre board members move costumes and other properties from storage to the Ross Street Theater. HCT is undergoing a major organization of costumes and props and will have an air-conditioned rummage sale Sept. 4-6. - Beauty queens and gun-fighters will highlight this year’s 37th annual Hamilton County Dove Festival activities on the square downtown, while rodeos and dancing will be fea-tured at the Circle T Arena.
Twenty Hamilton beauties had entered the Dove Festival pageant by the early deadline, according to Hamilton Cham-ber of Commerce Manager Steve Almquist, who said he expects that many more con-testants to enter by the final deadline of Aug. 15 at noon.
The pageant will be held on Saturday, Aug. 23, at 6 p.m. in the Chandler Craig Auditorium at Hamilton High School.
Tiaras, which are on display at the Kaboodle, as well as tro-phies, sashes and other awards, will be awarded in six divisions – Sweetheart (ages 3-4), Little Miss (5-6), Junior Miss (7-9), Duchess (10-12), Princess (13-15) and Queen (16-18).
Each contestant will model an evening gown/fancy dress on stage, and all contestants except for Sweetheart division will have personal interviews on the day of the pageant. The Sweethearts will be asked on-stage questions during the pag-eant.
Each contestant will be evaluated by out-of-town judges on modeling, appear-ance, interview questions and photographs. Each division will also honor Most Photogenic and Miss Congeniality, and the Dove Festival Queen will re-ceive a $500 scholarship. For-mer Dove Festival queens Can-dace Stroud and Harmony Thompson are co-chairs of this year’s pageant.
Vendors will set up around the square Friday evening and early Saturday, according to the chamber office.
Gunfighters will stage shootouts on the courthouse square near the stage at 1:30 p.m., 3:30 p.m. and 5:30 p.m. on Dove Festival Day, Satur-day, Aug. 30.
The day will also feature a donut-eating contest with pro-ceeds to benefit the Tiffany Cole Memorial Scholarship Fund. Preliminaries will be held a week ahead of time, with finals set for 9 a.m. Aug. 30 at the Donut Shop, just after the Dove Festival 5K, which will begin at 8 a.m. The 5K is spon-sored by the Hamilton Wellness Center, and more information can be obtained by calling 386-1670.
The outdoor gallery on Henry Street will be dedicated at 9:30 a.m., just prior to the parade, which will begin at 10 a.m. Mark Sepolio is this year’s parade chairman.
Entertainment will kickoff on the stage at 11:30 a.m. fea-turing Abbi Clair, followed by Clepper-George at noon.
The Master Gardeners will host a dedication at 12:30, and there will be a ribbon cutting at the new Pecan Creek Park at 12:45 p.m.
