Rainfall less than half
of average at FSA office

Hamilton County Rainfall Chart
- What a difference a year makes. According to Farm Service Agency rainfall records at their location just east of Hamilton on Highway 22, we have received less than half the aver-age precipitation through the first half of the year. Through July 13, the FSA gauge has captured 9.58 inches of rain. Normal rainfall through the month of July is 21.26. Last year through the month of July the FSA showed 36.45 inches.
Through the first six months of this year only two month were above average for rainfall, March and April.
Certainly some locations in Central Texas have received more generous rain totals, but still, just about everyone is in need of more. Only last week, areas to the east of Hamilton received some rainfall. As much as 1 ½ inches was re-ported near Lanham.
A tropical storm moved into the Gulf of Mexico early this week, and forecasters gave some hope of beneficial rains to arrive from mid to late week. However, where the storm will strike was still uncertain Tues-day and more southern landfall will probably leave Central Texas high and dry.
While near record rainfalls were recorded last year, a total of 47.94 inches, a majority of that fell during the first seven months. Actually, four of the last five months were below normal in rain totals. Last Sep-tember was the last month that was significantly above average with 5.86 inches.
Although county officials have not yet deemed it neces-sary to instate a burn ban, they do urge extreme caution with any source of ignition while the dry conditions continue.
