FATAL ACCIDENT- A 21-year-old woman was killed Tuesday morning when the four-door Kia Spectra she was driving left the highway and impacted a group of live oak trees head-on about seven miles south of Hamilton on FM 2005. A passing motorist noticed the car, which was almost hidden by the trees, and notified authorities. A baby was found still strapped into a baby-carrier in the back seat. The child was taken by ambulance to Hamilton General Hospital and then transferred on to Scott and White Hospital in Temple for precautionary reasons. The baby did not appear to have serious injuries. Investigating State Trooper Kyle Matthews said unsafe speed was a factor in the accident. The car left the highway on a curve about a mile from the Cowhouse Creek bridge. Matthews said the victim was Jennifer Roth of Lewisville. She was pronounced dead at the scene by Justice of the Peace James Lively. Staff Photo

Relay For Life of Hamilton County held a wrap up meeting on Tuesday, June, 24 at the Lee Healthcare Conference Center. During the meeting, Karie Crenan, staff partner with the American Cancer Society presented final event figures to the committee and team captains in attendance.
She reported that approximately 300 people attended the Relay For Life of Hamilton County, which took place on May 16 and 17 around the county courthouse in Hamilton. The Relay event raised a total of $24,462.
Sixteen teams comprised of local residents of all ages raised $19,074 through various fundraising efforts over the last several months and during the night of Relay.
Team members raised another $2,658 through luminaria contributions. For a suggested minimum donation of $5, a luminaria either honoring a cancer survivor or in memory of someone that lost their battle with cancer would be lit during a special ceremony the evening of Relay. More than 500 luminaria lined the designated walking path, around the courthouse. In addition, $1,855 in sponsorship was raised through the support of local businesses and organizations and sales from the silent auction totaled $875.
“It was an absolutely awesome Relay” Crenan said. “I want to thank each of you for your commitment to our life-saving mission. “You all worked tirelessly to make this year’s Relay a huge success!” “The support of the entire community was reflected that night around the courthouse. Team members, sponsors, underwriters, survivors and numerous volunteers all came together to show their support and to join in the fight against this terrible disease.” I’m honored to have had the privilege to meet and work with each one of you.”
The RFL 2008 Committee members are Ronda Baker, Mary Baker, Mica Crownover, Kathy Kachilla, Nikki McCrum, Kyle and Kim Phillips and Julie Watson.
