Many curious onlookers drove past Hamilton General Hospital last Friday afternoon, surprised to see what looked like extra-terrestrial beings in the parking lot. The yellow-clad aliens set up two blue tents and an obstacle course with orange cones and children’s swimming pools.
It wasn’t an invasion; only a drill hosted by Hamilton EMS.
The regional hospital decon-tamination class for weapons of mass destruction included parti-cipants from Darnell Army Hospital, Mills County EMS and Metroplex Hospital as well as Hamilton EMS and HGH emergency department, nursing and environmental services staff members. The course was sponsored by the Central Texas Regional Advisory Council and taught by Steve Anderson of the Heart of Texas RAC’s hazmat division.
After the classroom portion of the training, the participants conducted a drill outside the emergency department of the hospital. The scenario involved contaminated patients, both ambulatory and non-ambulatory. The group donned the yellow hazmat gear and followed procedures to ensure that the victims were decontam-inated before entering the hospital.
The hospital will participate in another regional drill on July 1, after which participating hospitals will be able to gauge the effectiveness of their disaster response plans.
