At 11:30 p.m. last Saturday, the Hamilton County 911 operator received a call reporting a shooting off of U.S. Highway 281 north of Hamilton at the Tovar residence. Hamilton General Hospital EMS and Hamilton County Sheriff’s officers responded.
Investigating officer Sgt. Alan Kirkland told the Herald-News Monday that they found two persons injured from a gunshot.
Kirkland said that Victor DeLaFuente, 33, of Hico was struck by a rifle bullet in the lower part of his back. Brenda Magana, 32, of Stephenville received an injury to her right leg.
Kirkland said that a graduation party was being held at the residence. Two young children, ages four and eight, found a loaded deer rifle in a bedroom and began playing with it. The rifle discharged, went through the bedroom door and then through an outside wall. DeLa-Fuente and Magana were stand-ing at a picnic table outside. The male was struck just above the kidneys by the rifle bullet. A piece of the wall struck the female in the leg.
Both victims were transported to Hamilton General Hospital for emergency treatment. DeLaFuente was later taken by helicopter to Scott and White Hospital. Magana was treated and released from Hamilton General Hospital.
DeLaFuente has since been released from Scott and White.
Kirkland said the incident has been ruled an accidental shooting and no charges have been filed.
