Robert Redford

Hollywood has been the place for quite a lot of promising faces. Some of them multi-talented, others superbly talented at what they do and some very good at recognising other’s talents! It has never let us down as a place to look where extra ordinary talents prevail. One of them is Robert Redford.

Robert Redford Bio
He was the child of Charles Robert Redford and Martha Hart. Born on 18th August, 1936; Charles Robert Redford Jr. or better known as Robert Redford is truly a man of numerous talents. He is not only known as a successful actor but also as a businessman, film director, film producer, environmentalist and a modern day philanthropist.

He lost his mother right after he graduated high school. He studied at the Pratt Institute of Art and also lived a painter's life in Europe. He then studied acting in New York at the American Academy of Dramatic Arts.

Robert Redford Movies
Like many stars Robert Redford began his career in the culturally dynamic New York City where he would find work in both theatre and stage. Such experiences teamed up with his all-American good looks led him to success in movies and TV roles.

Starting from 1959, he began to gain popularity in television. He played small roles in many sensational TV series such as The Untouchables, Whispering Smith and Playhouse 90 amongst others.

His first opportunity to act in a feature role came in 1962 when he got to perform as Private Roy Loomis in the war drama War Hunt. Three years following his success in the movie he starred in the 1965 drama Inside Daisy Clover.

He gained national recognition for his role of Owen Legate in This Property Is Condemned, Paul Bratter in Barefoot in the Park and Norman “Sonny” Steele in The Electric Horseman. But soon Redford became aware of exactly how mundane and repetitive his acting roles had become. As a result he turned down many roles before he finally found his breakthrough in the form of the Sundance Kid in the William Goldman production of The Sundance Kid. It was because of this role that he got his reputation as a charming, reliable actor.

But Redford did suffer much after that because of less than top notch films like Downhill Racer, Tell Them Willie Boy Is Here and Little Fauss and Big Halsy. Although the five years up to 1972 were not his most successful years he managed to turn his fate around by acting in movies like The Way We Were and The Sting. Both were filmed in 1973 and made Redford number one in the box office. He was nominated for Oscar for his role in The Sting.
Robert Redford as a Director
Robert Redford long nurtured an urge to work on both sides of the lens and so began his directing career with the release of the Ordinary people in the 1980s. He won the Academy award for the best director for this drama which was about the misfortunes of an upper-middle class family.

Robert Redford also directed The Milagro Beanfield War in the late 1980s. The war drama was well received by critics but it did not receive the much expected gratitude form the box office.

Robert Redford Wives
Robert Redford first married Lola van Wagenen in 1958 and had 4 children: Scott, Shauna, Jamey and Amy. Scott died young because of sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS). Redford was divorced in 1985 and married Sibylle Szaggars in 2009.

Redford is very much politically active and is a well known liberalist. Redford was quite successful throughout his life and used the majority of his wealth to buy the entire Utah property, where he built the Sundance ski resort. In 1980 he also established the Sundance Institute there for aspiring film-makers.
